Dear Professional Advisors,
It’s hard to believe it’s already mid-July! Camp Milligan, a partnership of MCCF and the Crawfordsville Park and Recreation Department, is in its fifth year and hosts nearly 45 campers, ages 5-12. Early Learning Director Lisa Walter provided a recap of the last 8 weeks below.
We’ve had an incredible summer so far at Camp Milligan! It’s been a joy spending our days with returning campers, staff, and families—and welcoming so many new faces into the fun. Each week at Camp Milligan has a theme that helps guide our curriculum, field trip destinations, and STEAM Lab activities. Here are some highlights:
Week 1- Race Into Summer
We studied the history of the Indianapolis 500 and ended our first week with an exciting field trip to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. We also took a lap around the track and got to “kiss the bricks.”
Week 2- Backyard Biologists
Some of our weekly activities included leaf detective work, garden collages, and the book of the week was “Up in the Garden, Down in the Dirt.” Our field trip took us to Eagle Creek Park and Earth Discovery Center. Campers were able to hike, build habitats for bugs, and even “scoop for goop” in their educational pond.
Week 3- The Great Camp Bake-Off
This week was truly one for the books. Our campers started their week with a trip to Mamá Ines Bakery, Cason Family Park, and Mike Aulby Bowling- yes, all in one day! We continued our interest in baking with a cookie lesson from our friends at Purdue Extension and visited The Flying Cupcake. The weather was beautiful and we were happy to spend our afternoon at the Carmel Water Park.
Our baking week ended strong with a “Donut you LOVE Camp Milligan,” day complete with donuts from The Warehouse Bakery and donut themed STEM and Literacy activities. Joyce Grimble, our special guest, brought a variety of fruit for the children to sample and helped us make fruit pizza.
Week 4- Secrets of the Rainforest
We visited many tropical destinations- both virtually and in person. Campers researched rainforest animals and plants, crafted their own slinky snakes, rain sticks, and more. Our weekly field trip led us to the Garfield Park Conservatory for a lesson on rainforest plants. We also completed a scavenger hunt in their attached Children’s Garden.
Week 5- Sunny Side-Up
This week was all about fun in the sun and our favorite summer activities that included lemonade taste testing, rainbow art, and watermelon crafts. We visited Holliday Park in Indianapolis for nature exploration and stomping in some awesome, historic water ruins.
Week 6- Hometown Heroes
We kicked off this week with a visit to Wellbrooke to sing songs and deliver cards to residents. We also walked the Story Trail at the Brickyard Nature Park and enjoyed lunch at McDonald’s. Multiple police officers and firefighters took time out of their busy schedules to visit and we appreciate them so much! The week ended with a trip to Murphy Aquatic Park.
Week 7- Wild, Wild, Weather
Meteorologist Chad Evans visited our campers to tell us about his career and we had a great Q & A session about tornadoes. We visited the Indiana State Museum and IMAX theater to continue learning about the beautiful world around us.
Week 8- Treasure Island
Campers created pirate self-portraits before heading to the Montgomery County 4-H Fair for a scavenger hunt. Everyone had a wonderful time exploring the fairgrounds, visiting the animals, and checking out the amazing projects—including exhibits created by some of our very own Camp Milligan 4-H members. We wrapped up the week with an exciting trip to Columbian Park Zoo, a splash-filled afternoon at Tropicanoe Cove Water Park, and a sweet treat from Pink Walrus Frozen Yogurt.
With just two weeks of summer camp remaining, we're soaking up every moment and making the most of every adventure. We can't wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store!
